Community Response – Working with the community, for the community…

27th May, 2020

Last week we received a list from Swindon Borough Council of 300+ self shielding residents within our parish, that we needed to check in on, to make sure they were OK and had access to their essential supplies. Between some of the Councillors, our band of volunteers and some of our dedicated staff, we have made a huge dent in contacting the residents. We have also agreed to contact those who requested it or that we were unable to reach in a couple of weeks time. At last night’s Full Council meeting (via Teams on 26th May 2020), Councillors passed on the feedback that the majority of people that were contacted were very grateful for the work that we are doing during the pandemic and really appreciated the call. Special thanks to our administrator Kim, for the challenging task of organising and updating the call lists, matching the residents up with the appropriate volunteer, managing the SBC deliveries… as well as taking the day to day...

Fortnightly Remote Council Discussions

14th May, 2020

Keeping in touch and staying connected – fortnightly Council discussions during Covid-19 Our Councillors and Officers have been holding remote meetings every fortnight since the start of lockdown. We’ve used this time every couple of weeks to check in on each other. There’s been some really helpful informal discussions updating each other on what we’ve been getting up to in our local community and how the parish council is progressing, despite the challenges of Covid-19. This week’s discussion included updates on the progress of our Parks and Open Spaces team, the financial year-end and how our ‘remote’ internal audit visit went, a good debate on the next edition of the parish council’s magazine, and a quick debrief on the remote VE event we held on Facebook. If you’re feeling left out, don’t be! We are holding our first remote and public Full Council meeting on Tuesday 26th May at 7.30pm and you’re all invited. Residents are encouraged to send any public questions to the Clerk in advance and we will soon be posting further details of the joining instructions for you to attend. We look forward to seeing...

Community Response (Covid-19)

13th May, 2020

“Working with the community, for the community” We have been helping local pharmacy and our neighbours on Thames Avenue, Homeground Pharmacy, with their prescription deliveries since the lockdown began at the end of March. We’ve helped them during times of need and we have been very proactive to get the deliveries out within a couple of hours of receiving the prescriptions. We have a team of four, fabulous members of staff, who take it in turns to help the pharmacy every day, and where the demand is high, all four operatives can report in to the pharmacy on staggered shifts to combat the flurry of prescriptions together. We reached out to the other pharmacies in the North Swindon area such as Abbey Meads, Taw Hill and ASDA Pharmacy at the Orbital to expand upon our services, but they have not taken us up yet on this offer....

Open Spaces Consultation – Spring 2020

13th May, 2020

Have your say on how you would improve the open spaces within your community! Haydon Wick Parish Council is consulting with residents, local business and visitors to help enhance the open spaces within its Parish. The purpose of the consultation is to identify the needs of the Parish and to ensure that there is adequate open space provision both now and in the future. The Council is keen to hear from residents, local businesses and even visitors to the Parish with their views on its open spaces and how they use them. Open spaces include green open spaces that are used for ball games, children playing, scenic walking routes, exercising dogs, etc and the maintenance and enhancement to the 24 play parks Haydon Wick already has. Local residents are being encouraged to complete the online survey which will help shape the open space across the community that they live in. The Council will be receiving and reviewing the feedback from the consultation for the next 8 weeks, which may be extended considering the current challenges Covid-19 social distancing rules are determining. The Chairman of the Amenities & Leisure Committee commented: “We’re positive this Consultation will help deliver the Council’s vision to serve existing and future communities by guiding the improvements of existing open spaces. I would encourage residents to complete the survey expressing your views on the many and varied open spaces in the local area.” This survey can be found on www.haydonwick.gov.uk and on the Council’s Facebook page...

Spring Hedge/Shrub Cutting Schedule

11th May, 2020

The Grounds Maintenance Contractors that carry out the Council’s shrub and hedge cutting (Countrywide) were unable to cut the hedge pictured below at Coleridge Close last week due to noting that birds were nesting. Therefore, this hedge will be revisited in the Autumn schedule (September-November) when it can be cut safely.   Countrywide risk assess every hedge prior to cutting to ensure the works can take place and provide us daily with an update of where they have been cutting for our team of quality checkers to sign off before Countrywide move on to the next area. Reports of the quality of the hedge cutting, where the team are up to on the schedule and any issues arising are taken to our Amenities & Leisure Committee (who deal with all the Parks & Open Spaces) for consideration.   A brief quote from the Contracts Manager below: “The shrub pruning at this time of year is necessary to keep your paths and pedestrian ways clear of the growth, which started very early this year due to the mild winter we had. This is required to ensure no Health & Safety risks to your residents from growth coming out onto pathways and is very normal in suburban areas and high foot traffic areas. The teams are advised to check on nesting birds prior to any trimming taking place and also have all signage necessary when hedge cutting.”   The team are off to a flying start and already the area is...

VE Day 75

5th May, 2020

FRIDAY 8th MAY 2020 – VE DAY 75 In line with government guidance, the Council postponed the VE Day event due to take place at KGV Field, Haydon Wick. Despite the measures in place, there were still ways that we could engage with our community by sharing a series of posts on our Facebook page (Haydon Wick Council) asking residents to share pictures of their decorations, picnics and stories of their grandparents/great grandparents during WW2. We shared links and templates to design your own bunting, make your own flags, some delicious recipes and some activities for the children to do at home. Please see below some special performances that we factored in to the day. – 11.30am – Haydon Wick Parish Council’s Chairman, Councillor Linda Brown, has prepared a video speech to commemorate VE DAY and we have a special performance of the ‘Last Post’. The file is too large to share on our website but you will be able to view on Facebook without having an account by clicking this link https://www.facebook.com/1648857332022716/videos/2869141409788897/ – 2pm – Britannia Majorettes & Miniettes Video Display and picture collage. We received a video from the Britannia Majorettes and Miniettes put together by their Mace Bearer, Bethany. This created a real sense of a virtual display as sadly due to our event being postponed, we were unable to see their new display. https://www.facebook.com/1648857332022716/videos/234767254634334/ In between times we shared videos of the Red Arrows going across the skies of London, a clip of Churchill’s famous...

Grass Cutting Schedule

4th May, 2020

The grass is currently being cut by a team of two working reduced hours and therefore the ‘cut off points’ for the end of the day may vary slightly from the service we provided before the pandemic, the areas will be cut in line with their schedule before they move on to the next area. The grass cutting takes place dependant on the weather conditions, which may also cause a couple of days delay and is assessed daily in case any other core roles for the Council take priority. The team are currently finishing up their schedule in Oakhurst, moving on to Abbey Meads on Monday 11th May, Haydon Wick, Moredon, Haydon End, Mouldon Hill and finishing up the schedule in Oakhurst (this area will be defined at the beginning of the week, so we can delete the areas before or move them to the end of the list). The schedule could take approx. 6 weeks to complete. Please note that the grass is being cut by ride on mowers and at the present time there is no strimming or blowing. The larger open spaces and play areas are cut by a Contractor fortnightly, again subject to weather...
