Hedge Cutting

25th June, 2019

Hedges within the parish boundary require maintenance trimming to keep them within bounds.  The best time of year for this maintenance pruning is during the summer months when the plants are active, with a hard prune on both hedges and shrubs in the late autumn/early winter months.  Unfortunately this does mean that the maintenance pruning will be occurring during the bird nesting season. When undertaking  these summer works on the shrubs and hedges, our contractors will be responsible for checking that there are no birds nesting, as it is an offence under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 to damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is active. The bird nesting season is usually considered to run from March to August, although this can vary depending on weather patterns or the type of birds. If our contractors do see active birds’ nests, they will postpone the summer maintenance on that section of shrubs/hedges, until the nest is deemed non-active.  This may mean there are some sections of work that will not be completed next to other areas that have been pruned due to active birds but we believe that as most of the shrubs are low level, birds will not be nesting in these areas due to the inherent dangers this brings to the nest (especially from cats). Currently, we are undertaking a light cut of hedges and bushes that may be causing a hazard.  Our Contractors started this programme in Abbey Meads, are currently...
